Properties vary depending on the relative molecular mass, from colorless, odorless viscous liquids to waxy solids. The molecular weight of PEG is between 200 and 600, it is a liquid at room temperature, and the molecular weight is above 600, which gradually becomes a semi-solid, and the properties are also different with the average molecular weight. From colorless, odorless viscous liquids to waxy solids. With the increase of molecular weight, its hygroscopic ability decreases correspondingly. PEG is soluble in water, ethanol and many other organic solvents. Low steam pressure, stable to heat, acid and alkali. PEG does not work with many chemicals. It has good hygroscopicity, lubricity and cohesiveness. Non-toxic, non-irritating.

Under normal conditions, PEG is very stable, but it can interact with oxygen in the air at temperatures of 120 ° C or higher. In an inert atmosphere (such as nitrogen and carbon dioxide), it will not change even if heated to 200 ~ 240 ° C, and thermal cracking will occur when the temperature rises to 300 ° C. Adding antioxidants, such as phenothiazine with a mass fraction of 0.25% to 0.5%, can improve its chemical stability. Any of its decomposition products are volatile and do not form crusty or slimy deposits.

Polyethylene glycol is a polymer of ethylene oxide hydrolysate, non-toxic, non-irritating, widely used in various pharmaceutical preparations. Low molecular weight polyethylene glycol PEG toxicity is relatively large, overall, the toxicity of diols is quite low. Topical application of PEG, especially mucosal administration, can cause irritating pain. In topical lotions, this product increases the flexibility of the skin and has a moisturizing effect similar to glycerin. Large oral doses may cause diarrhea. In the injection, the concentration of polyethylene glycol 300 is about 30%(V/V), and the concentration is greater than 40%(V/V).

Polyethylene oxide additive polymer with water. Molecular weight below 700, at 20℃ for colorless odorless non-volatile viscous liquid, slightly absorbent. The molecular weight between 700 and 900 is a semi-solid. The molecular weight of 1000 and above is light white waxy solid or flake paraffin or liquid powder. Soluble in water, soluble in many organic solvents, such as alcohol, ketone, chloroform, glycerol and aromatic hydrocarbons; Insoluble in most aliphatic hydrocarbons and ethers.

With the increase of molecular weight, the water solubility, vapor pressure, water absorption and solubility of organic solvent of PEG decreased correspondingly, while the freezing point, relative density, flash point and viscosity increased correspondingly. It is thermally stable, does not work with many chemicals, and does not hydrolyze.
