Tween 80 is widely used in liquid, semi-solid and solid preparations as O/W emulsifiers, solubilizers, wetting agents, dispersants and stabilizers.

Polysorbate 80 (or Tween 80) is a non-ionic surfactant, has significant resistance to electrolytes, strong hydrophilicity, a class of excellent O/W emulsifier, high concentration of electrolytes and pH changes have little effect on its emulsifying ability. It has good emulsification effect on vegetable oil, mineral oil and animal fat. As a wetting agent, it can improve the surface wettability of drug particles. Water-based tablets for hydrophobic use allow water to penetrate easily and speed up disintegration. In addition, its good solubilization and deflocculation can improve the dissolution of drugs, and it is suitable for tablets with hydrophobic drugs, poor water solubility of excipients, large dextrin ratio, or large hardness of particles produced due to the properties of raw excipients themselves, and the disintegration degree of sodium carboxymethyl starch alone is not significantly improved.

Properties: Light yellow to amber oily viscous liquid. Soluble in water, soluble in ethanol, vegetable oil, ethyl acetate, methanol, toluene insoluble in mineral oil. It is gelatinous at low temperature and recovers after heat. Very smelly, slightly bitter taste.

Uses: Used as emulsifier, wetting agent, penetrant, diffusion agent, etc., also used as a component of cotton fiber and viscose cord tensioning agent. Used as an emulsifier in the production of polyurethane foams. The food industry is used as an ice cream emulsifier, the amount is 0.1% butter, and the general oil is about 1%.

Preparation method: The sorbitol was distilled by heating and vacuum, and the water was distilled at 60-85℃ (8.0kPa) to reach the calculated amount, and the material was discharged while hot to gain and lose sorbitol. Esterify it with oleic acid, Despan 80. Then, Span-80 and ethylene oxide were condensed under alkali catalysis to obtain Tween 80.
